Dugong yang biasa di kenal dengan duyung sudah jarang di temukan di daerah pulau senayang, Kec. Senanyang, Kab. Lingga , Prov. Kepulauan Riau. Dugong adalah mamalia laut yang merupakan salah satu anggota Sirenia atau sapi laut yang mampu bertahan hidup mencapai usia 22-25 tahun.
Dan dugong sendiri merupakan mamalia laut yang herbivora (pemakan tumbuhan) dedaunan seperti lamun (seagrass)
Dugong merupakan mamalia laut yang dilindungi sesuai dengan peraturan undang-undang No.5 Tahun 1990 tentang konservasi sumber daya hayati dan ekosistemnya. Dan dugong termasuk ke dalam hewan dilindungi tingkat appendix 1 karena tingkat kepunahannya yang tinggi.
Saat ini dugong sudah jarang ditemukan. Hal ini juga disampaikan oleh Bapak Rusmadi sebagai warga setempat di pulau senayang “nelayan di sini pernah bertemu dengan dugong tapi hanya dalam waktu tertentu, dan itu pun hanya beberapa kali dalam setahun bahkan tidak ditemukan sama sekali, jadi bisa disimpulkan bahwa dugong di sini sudah langka atau sudah hampir punah” ujarnya.
Salah satu penyebab dugong sulit untuk ditemukan atau langka karena ada perburuan liar yang di lakukan oleh oknum-oknum yang tidak bertanggung jawab untuk diambil taring, daging dan bahkan air matanya, yang dipandang memilki nilai ekonomi tersendiri.
“Hal ini sangat memprihatinkan karena di tengah sulitnya tingkat keberadaan dugong, manusia dengan mudahnya memburu demi mendapatkan keuntungan pribadi” ujarnya lagi
Begitu pentingnya ekositem laut, karena jika salah satu ekosistem rusak maka akan mempengaruhi kehidupan di laut itu sendiri. Maka dari itu kita harus menjaga dan melindungi ekosistem, termasuk menajaga kelestarian hewan-hewan dilindungi seperti mamalia laut seperti dugong ini, agar dimasa yang akan datang dugong masih bisa bertahan hidup.
